Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Mothercraft Nurse?

A Mothercraft nurse has specialist paediatric training and qualifications in Postnatal and Early Childhood care and development of newborns through to pre schoolers. As registered health professionals our aim is to guide parents through one on one advice/counselling and “hands on” support.

The nursing qualification of Mothercraft Nursing was historically obtained from an intensive, 18 month live-in course at Tresillian or Karitane (in NSW).

Our knowledge and training included lactation and breastfeeding, responsive sleep and settle strategies, feeding issues, routine management, assessing milestones, behavioural management and play.

Why choose a Mothercraft nurse instead of a “baby whisperer” or sleep consultant?

When one of our Nurses comes to your home, you can trust the welfare of your baby or toddler into our care.

Why? Because we are Tresillian or Karitane trained nurses with have a clinical background in postnatal nursing and like all other health professionals must be registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) through the national Nurses and Midwifery Board.

This means that we have the medical training and knowledge to be able to assess and identify the causes behind babies and toddlers who are not thriving, developing or sleeping within normal developmental expectations. Potentially it may be lactation problems, breastfeeding techniques, formula feeding, reflux or other digestive issues, food allergies or intolerances. If needs be we may also decide it best to refer you to other Specialists before you move forward with us. We are mindful of the latest evidence based  research ( required by our Registration) combined with our extensive postnatal experience.

Do your nurses use Control Crying or Cry It Out methods for sleep support?

No. We use responsive sleep and settle techniques that are supportive and developmentally age appropriate. And it is important to us that we work with individual parenting styles and goals so that you are comfortable with the proposed approach and plan.

Because positive changes take time.

You need to feel confident that the results you have witnessed during the nurse’s visit can be achieved by you through practice and continuity and by following the flexible Care Plan.

How quickly can you arrange a home consultation?

We know that by the time you have contacted Mothercraft for Babies you usually need support and advice as soon as possible. So generally speaking we can arrange for a Nurse to come to your home within 7 days.

When would a Phone/Skype/Facetime consultation be more suitable?

A Phone/Skype/Facetime consultation may be your choice for quick access to advice when you are confident enough to implement any changes. Often this is a good solution for older babies and toddlers when you need advice on improving routines, diet and nutrition, age appropriate settling and resettling techniques. Or maybe you would like regular reviews on you and your baby’s progress and development, your professional Early Childhood coach by teleconference and someone to talk to for reassurance!

Are your Nurses suitably insured whilst in my home?

Yes all our nurses are employed by Mothercraft for Babies and remunerated under the current Nurses Award. This means they are insured with Professional Indemnity and Public Liability and Workers compensation.

What if my baby sleeps or behaves perfectly during the home consultation?

With the depth of our experience, we expect that your baby or toddler will demonstrate any challenges you have both been facing during our shortest visit. Even when you would swear that they know when we are arriving!

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

Our cancellation policy is included in our Terms of Service on our website and also included in your confirmation email when you have booked with us. When appropriate there can be a discretionary refund (minus the cancellation fee) outside the usual Terms and under certain circumstances beyond your control. This is decided by Beth Barclay CEO.

Your website says that Mothercraft for Babies is “trusted by Paediatricians”, what does that mean?

This means that many Health Professionals and Paediatric specialists now refer to us as support for their patients. Just as we refer to them when we deem this to be best solution for you.

And they refer to us because of the quality of support, we are qualified professionals and our Nurses get great results and very satisfied and grateful parents.
