Recently a new App called “Infant Cries Calculator” has been developed by a company in Taiwan claiming to decode baby’s cries. The way it works is you hold the one page App near your crying baby for 15 seconds and it will decode the cry into four categories.
Channel 7 News ran a story on this App last week and the producer approached me to provide comment and my opinion as a baby “expert”.
My initial reaction, other than one raised eyebrow, was perhaps there could be instances where this “quick fix” could be worth trying when parents reach that state of overwhelm and sleep deprivation through an unsettled baby. But whilst this App is inexpensive and may provide a quick answer, my view is that it could pose real risks in good decision making for new parents.
All babies have different temperaments, emotional resilience and personalities. That’s what makes each of us unique. How could “one cry fit all”? What if the diagnosis is incorrect? How are you getting to know your baby’s needs? Why would you delegate that responsibility to technology?
Parenting is a work in progress and a journey, full of ups and downs and trial and error. Learning to understand how your baby communicates with you and what that cry means takes time and practice. Then you can make confident decisions and develop the skills to suitably meeting your baby’s needs. That’s how you build a strong attachment and relationship so that you become the expert on your baby! Really hard at times but fantastic when you hear yourself saying “ she’s hungry, I know that cry”.
